Unemployment in South Africa is structural and much worse reflected in the figures. The national unemployment rate is 33,6%, including the 26,1% of the Western Cape. All other provinces recorded

unemployment rates above 30%. If it wasn't for the DA-governed Western Cape, South Africa's official unemployment figure would have been above 40%.


The August 2026 figures

According to the statistics reported by Statistics South Africa, the national unemployment rate was 33,6% in the second quarter, 2026. This represents a growth of 0,9%, quarter-on-quarter, compared with the period January to March 2026, and a growth of 0,4% on a year-to-year basis, compared with the period April-June 2025.
